The Art of Planetary Science is an annual art exhibition run by UArizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory that celebrates the beauty and elegance of science, founded by graduate students in 2013 as a public outreach project to engage the local community in our work.

Carlos Rene Pacheco started his undergraduate degree in astronomy, but he had a change of heart, switching his degree to photography. Since graduating from the University of Arizona, Pacheco fully embraced his love for the craft, becoming a renowned photographer. Carlos Rene Pacheco is a photographer and new media artist and he currently resides in Fargo, North Dakota where he has taught courses in Photography, Contemporary Art Theory, and Professional Practices in the Arts as an Assistant Professor of Art at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Anh-Thuy Nguyen is a Tucson-based multi-media/transdisciplinary artist, whose work spans from photography, video, and installation to performance art, and she is the head of the photography program at Pima Community College, Tucson, Arizona."

The SPE Midwest Juried Exhibition brings together professional and student members of this photographic organization. The exhibited works are loosely tied by the photographic medium itself and highlight the various approaches and concerns of artists working with photography today. Works by professional members are selected by Jennifer Murray, executive director of Filter Photo and student works are selected by Alejandro Cartagena, a photographer and educator based in Monterrey, Mexico.

Shifting Landscapes: Past, Present, and Future
Being image-makers, each of us observes and records our lives and our environment in our own way. Though differing in approach, the works of three lens-based artists: Anh-Thuy Nguyen, Carlos Rene Pacheco, and Jacinda Russell share a theme of loss, made visible through human interaction in the landscape. The panelists will lead the audiences though their visual journeys from the rural landscapes of the Upper Midwest, USA to the crowded cities in Viet Nam, to the glacial melt at Ilulissat Icefjord in Disko Bay, Greenland. We continually discuss global warming, while our legislators debate on policies to monitor human activities from deforestation, oil drilling, to movement of refugees, etc. Every second we are living, we are creating an impact. Using our visual work as a gateway, the panel discussion will invite dialogues for the audiences to reflect on and share thoughts of impact we have been producing in our daily life.

Work from Flatland will be featured in the 11th Horizontal Grandeur Annual Juried Fine Art Exhibition at the Stevens County Historical Society & Museum in Morris, MN. The exhibit will run from June 21 – October 26, 2018.

During my 24/2 residency I started on a larger body of work tentatively titled Artifact. This project is an extension of some of my previous work involving found photographs and a glitch aesthetic. With the advent of digital technology came a de-materialization not only of ourselves but of the photographic medium. Photographs, which in the past were exclusively physical objects shared among friends and family, have been mostly replaced by virtual means of sharing through social media and online photo-streams.
